Fallbrook JV girls tennis cruises to first victory

FALLBROOK – In the season’s first preseason match, the Fallbrook JV girls tennis team took on its neighboring rival, Valley Center, and cruised to its first victory, 15-3 on Thursday. Not that things started out easily. The team uniforms didn’t arrive in time and a bottle of chocolate milk somehow found its way onto the clothing of what was passing as the players’ substitute uniforms (courtesy of the windy roads on the bus ride to Valley Center). At Adams Park, the on-court temperature was close to 100 degrees, but the Warriors didn’t waste any time in racing to an early lead.

Singles starters, Natalie Yamkova, Kathy Young and Joellen Banks, all shut out their opponents, 6-0, and each player remained undefeated throughout the day in their remaining matches. The starting doubles teams of Holly Contreras/Hailey Tucker, Kellie Fyffe/Tori Sullivan and Claire Ginter/Michaela Kazen, also won their first matches convincingly, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0 respectively. Also scoring critical victories were Claire Ogden, Jill Drake and Gabby McLemore. Team captains Holly Contreras and Kathy Young provided a steady hand for the seven freshmen who make up the majority of the 12 member team.

Coach Randy Hicks is excited about this year’s team, made up of many experienced players, as well as several who had never played tennis prior to joining the squad. He said one of the most admirable qualities of the team is their hard work in practice, excellent sportsmanship and the desire of each player to help the other become a better player.

Over the next three weeks, both the varsity and JV teams face a rigorous preseason schedule, as they have scheduled out-of-division games against San Diego County’s best teams, to ready them for their upcoming league matches. This year the Warriors move to the West Avocado league, where their opponents will be Mission Hills, Vista, San Marcos, San Pasqual and Escondido. The first league match will be September 23, with the varsity playing at Mission Hills, and the JV playing at Fallbrook High School.
