VanderLans shares win at Central Point

Jack VanderLans shared the Steer Wrestling win at the Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo held June 3-5 in Central Point, Oregon.

The 2001 Fallbrook High School graduate had a time of 3.6 seconds, tying him with Billy Bugenig for the fastest time of the rodeo. VanderLans took home $1,757 for his split of first and second.

“I was really excited to win that rodeo,” VanderLans said. “Everything came together really well.”

VanderLans rode June 3 and was the first steer wrestler to compete. Central Point is in southwestern Oregon, and VanderLans had not previously seen the steer he drew.

“I didn’t know a whole lot about him,” VanderLans said. “I didn’t have really any of that knowledge.”

Blaine Jones of Templeton, Calif., let VanderLans use his horse. Wes Lockard, who shared sixth place, also used Jones’ horse. “Horse worked really well,” VanderLans said.

Stan Branco served as VanderLans’ hazer.

“He’s an excellent hazer,” VanderLans said. “I definitely felt that I had an advantage with that horse and Stan hazing for me.”

VanderLans’ time of 3.6 seconds was his fastest ever.

“I drew a good steer and just fortunate enough to make a good run,” said VanderLans. “I took a pretty aggressive start at him, and made a run without any mistakes.”
