Girls JV tennis team avenges loss from last season

FALLBROOK - In their pre-game meeting, the Fallbrook High School girls junior varsity tennis team couldn’t agree if they’d lost last year to San Diego tennis powerhouse, Cathedral Catholic High School, by a score of 14-4, or 15-3. One thing they could agree on, however, was that they’d lost. They vowed to do their best to not let it happen again, and riding on their success the prior week’s 15-3 domination over Valley Center, they put words to action and came away with a win, 13-5.

Coach Randy Hicks gave special credit to what he calls his particularly talented “Big Five,” made up of two returning students, junior Holly Contreras and sophomore Kathy Young, and a powerful crop of freshman, Natalie Yamkova, Joellen Banks and Hailey Tucker. And he feels the remaining seven players of his twelve-girl squad have strong potential to develop into excellent players.

Anchoring the number one singles spot for the second consecutive week was Natalie Yamkova, who rang up three perfect “donuts,” with perfect scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0. In other singles matches, Kathy Young prevailed 6-3, 6-2 and 3-6. Joellen Banks scored 6-4, 4-6, with Jill Drake substituting in to win the final set, 6-1.

The number one doubles team of Holly Contreras and Hailey Tucker also came away with a perfect record, winning by scores of 6-0, 6-4 and 6-0. Tori Sullivan and Claire Ogden won 6-1, 6-1, with Michaela Kazen and Gabby McLemore substituting in with a 4-6 score, Kellie Fyffe and Claire Ginther’s scores were 2-6, 1-6 and 6-4.
