Students discuss 21st Century Learning

FALLBROOK – Thirty-three students representing Fallbrook High School, Ivy High School, and Oasis High School met with Fallbrook Union High School District superintendent Dale Mitchell on Friday, Sept. 17 to share their thoughts and insights regarding what a 21st century education and classroom should look like for them.

“Though diverse in their gender, ethnicity, grade level, the schools they represent, and the school programs in which they are active, they share much in common,” said Mitchell. “On a daily basis, these students regularly use cell phones and computers for communication, entertainment, and education. They also believe that students should be using technology as part of their learning experiences at school.”

“The Student Conference on 21st Century Learning is part of the district’s continuing efforts to strengthen the educational program so that our students can be successful in our local and global society, both today and once they graduate,” said Mitchell. “I addition to being attentive to technology and its role in learning, students also participated in learning activities designed to support engaged learners and critical and creative thinking skills.”

Students discussed and prepared presentation based upon their understanding and application of excerpts from literature including “Teaching the Digital Generation,” “Pockets of Potential,” and “Youth Safety on a Living Internet.”

Mitchell said more opportunities for student input regarding 21st Century Learning are planned as the district and schools seek to enhance the quality of student learning.
