Rain possible early in week

SAN DIEGO - Light rain could fall in the San Diego area early this week, along with snow flurries in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

There's a 20 percent chance of showers Monday, increasing to 40 percent Monday night, with more precipitation possible on Tuesday because of a low pressure trough moving into the region, said Tina Stall of the Weather Service.

"It actually seems quite strong," Stall said. "We'll get fairly cool temperatures, even some snow flurries in the higher elevations, like 7,500 feet and above."

High temperatures throughout the week are expected to be in the 60s along the coast and low 70s inland, according to the NWS.

Snow isn't expect to fall in the Laguna Mountains of San Diego County, but could fall in mountain ranges in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

While the system is strong, the rain will be light, around 0.10 inch, she said.

The weather over the past week has included record high temperatures, thick fog and thunderstorms that brought an unusual amount of lightning strikes west of the mountains.

About .39 inch of rain fell during thunderstorms today in Tierra del Sol in far southeastern San Diego County, and .11 inch fell in Borrego Springs.

High temperatures were in the low 70s along the coast and low 80s inland.
