A lesson in frugal driving

I drove my BMW from Fallbrook to Las Vegas at 55 mph and got 34.97 miles to the gallon.

From Salt Lake City to St. George, I drove 80 mph and got 29.21 miles to the gallon. Driving at 55 mph saved 19.72 % of fuel.

Those who drive in the fast lanes can easily save over $250 a year by driving slower in the right lanes. That’s like earning an extra $300 since taxes aren’t deducted.

I drove from Fallbrook to Los Angeles during rush hour at no more than 55 mph and calculated my actual time against driving at 70 mph. The difference was 20 minutes. But that assumed a constant 70 mph speed which is impossible. The real difference is probably 10 minutes.

If the wear on tires and brakes are considered, driving at 55 mph is time well spent.
