Mr. Crews needs to get a grip. The bridge under construction will go across the San Luis Rey River, not through it.

Many of us believe that well-designed bridges can enhance a river.

I think of the cable-stayed Harsha Bridge across the Ohio River (not named after me), suspension bridges like the George Washington Bridge across the Hudson and the Brooklyn Bridge across the East River, the steel arch Navajo Bridge across the Colorado, and the concrete Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel.

The San Luis Rey River will survive, as it has for the last 100 million years or so. And, by the way, the king the river is named for is Louis IX of France; Louis XIV was the Sun King.
