Non-profits need public funding

Times are tough for everyone. Non-profit organizations have been hit particularly hard as donations are drying up and public funding is threatened. When it comes to our choice for County Supervisor, I’m concerned that Steve Gronke has called for an end to funding non-profits.

Local non-profit organizations use volunteer hours and private donations to provide services that would cost far more if provided by the government. With state budget cuts threatening programs that serve the needy, non-profit organizations have stepped up to fill the gap.

Non-profits in unincorporated communities like Fallbrook provide for beautification, revitalization, recreation, and local business support. Unincorporated communities rely heavily on non-profit organizations to protect and enhance their rural character.

Gronke may think that cutting non-profit funding is a fiscally prudent decision. But, if he cared about fiscal responsibility, why did he endorse and campaign for a sales tax hike in Vista that will cost their taxpayers over $200 million?

We are fortunate to have fiscally responsible leadership at the County of San Diego that has managed taxpayer dollars well, allowing for reinvestment of our tax dollars back into the our communities.
