Workers spent several hours last Saturday building things like a quarter pipe, boxes, ramps, a short platform, and more for a new temporary, portable skatepark being constructed on the grounds of the 445 E. Ivy Street location of the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County in Fallbrook. The skatepark is scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 6.
At its October 28 meeting, the board of directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County unanimously voted to allow Fallbrook Skatepark Inc. (FSI) to use a portion of its Ivy Street property for the skatepark to serve local youth ages 5 to 18. The area that will house the skatepark has been used in the past as an outdoor basketball court.
“We are really excited about this,” said Roger Harrell, president of FSI, “but we want everyone to fully understand that this is only the integral first step toward a larger goal in the future of a permanent, free county skatepark for all ages.”
The original cost estimate for the skatepark was $18,000/year to cover insurance and wages for a skatepark monitor. The final budget has been established at $28,000 which includes the addition of a second skatepark monitor position for Saturdays and school holidays and other miscellaneous items including a portable bathroom, security deposit and a monitor telephone, explained Michelle Albanna, treasurer/secretary for FSI, who recognized the Boys & Girls Club for their assistance in getting the project off the ground.
“[The directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs] have graciously agreed to provide the space and payroll the skatepark monitors, for which FSI will reimburse them,” said Albanna.
Organizers said Fallbrook Skatepark will charge a $30 annual membership fee per skater and a daily $1 skate fee.
“We wish we didn’t have to charge anything, but we need to pay for the insurance and the park monitors, a stipulation of the insurance to keep the kids safe,” said Jane Koepcke, FSI member.
The organization is also accepting donations and sponsorships for the program and is in the process of planning a large fundraising event.
Registration for skatepark membership will begin on Sat., Nov. 6 at 9:00 a.m. at 445 E. Ivy Street. Parents must accompany youth under 18 to sign the membership form and waiver. On opening day, the skatepark will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Skaters are required to wear helmets at the facility.
