TEMECULA - A Murrieta resident will become the next commander of the Temecula office of the California Highway Patrol, the agency announced today.
Capt. Ernie Sanchez, who has lived in Murrieta for 10 years, previously served as the commander of the Office of Inspections and as interim inspector general at CHP headquarters in Sacramento.
Two of his sons graduated from Murrieta Valley High School and his daughter attends Vista Murrieta High. His wife, Jennifer, works for the Murrieta Unified School District.
Sanchez credits his father, a former school bus driver who spoke highly of the CHP, with influencing his decision to become an officer.
''My father had nothing but glowing remarks about the officers he dealt with,'' said Sanchez, a Brigham Young University graduate who originally planned on becoming a lawyer. ''Like my father, I developed a strong admiration for the department.''
Sanchez replaces retiring CHP Capt. Jeanne Jungers.
