Five Warriors earn all-league water polo honors

Five members of Fallbrook High School’s boys water polo team received all-league honors at the November 15 Avocado East League coaches’ meeting.

Two-meter set player Kort Heyneman and two-meter defender Zack Meyer were selected to the Avocado East League’s first team. Driver Alec Carpenter obtained second-team recognition while driver and wing Sam Rice was on the league’s third team, and goalkeeper Drew Ferguson received honorable mention designation.

“I thought it was pretty representative of a majority of the team,” said Fallbrook coach Bob Lamont. “None of these guys did it alone. They all had help.”

Fallbrook finished the 2010 season with an overall 22-8 record, including a first-round playoff loss. The Warriors placed second in the Avocado League East standings with an 8-2 record.

Meyer’s 84 goals led the Warriors while Heyneman scored 69 goals and Carpenter put 56 shots into the net

“Those three individuals scored more than the leading scorer in two of my first three years,” said Lamont, who has coached Fallbrook’s boys for six seasons. “I had good scoring from half my starters evenly distributed, which was really nice. It made it hard on defenses to focus on any one guy.”

Meyer’s total ranks third in school single-season history behind Jacob Pril’s 220 scores last year and Pril’s 187 goals in 2008. In 2009 Kevin Reichel’s 48 goals placed second on the team while Heyneman was third with 33 goals.

Meyer also led the team with 102 steals. Carpenter had 83 steals and Rice obtained 81 steals. Heyneman was the leading playmaker with 42 assists while Rice was closely behind with 41 assists.

The Warrior defense gave up an average of approximately eight goals a game during 2010, which was approximately a goal a game below the 2009 average. Fallbrook averaged approximately 3 ½ ejections per game, a decrease of approximately two from last year.

“They gave their opponents two less opportunities to score,” Lamont said.

Although all five all-league players are seniors, junior Mike Maryn had 22 goals and 37 steals while playing in 105 of the team’s 124 quarters; junior Tyler Vanderstelt had 35 goals and 33 assists in 71 quarters, and junior Brandon Lee had 18 steals in 19 quarters.

“We’ve got some juniors moving up,” Lamont said.
