Angel Society offers $14,500 in college scholarships

FALLBROOK - Nine Fallbrook High school students from the 2011 graduating class will be awarded scholarships totaling $14,500 by the Angel Society of Fallbrook, according to Jean Dooley, philanthropy chair.

The society plans to award five scholarships of $2,500 each to students accepted to four-year universities in the fall. In addition, four scholarships of $500 each will be given to students planning to attend a community college in the state of California. Last year, the Angels awarded four scholarships to FUHS seniors at $3,000 each.

The scholarships will be awarded based on a signed essay, grade point average, extracurricular activities, and financial need. Each applicant must also submit a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from faculty members.

Application forms are available at the FUHS Career Center and at the Angel Society’s new website at http://www.theangelsociety.org. Applications must be postmarked by April 1 and mailed to The Angel Society of Fallbrook, Attn: Philanthropy Committee, P.O. Box 1408, Fallbrook, CA 92088.

In other business, the Angel Society’s Board of Directors approved donations to various community groups totaling $11,600 at its January meeting.

The Fallbrook Music Society’s youth music education program topped the list of recipients with $5,000 earmarked for its fiscal year 2010-2011. The program offers a series of classical music concerts entitled, “A Curriculum of Musical Experiences” to more than 6,000 elementary school students annually. This year, the society hopes to expand the program to include Bonsall schools.

Casa de Amparo, an Oceanside-based organization that provides shelter and support to battered women and children, was awarded $2,500. Last year, the group served 353 children, providing nearly 3,000 nights of emergency shelter for those who had been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.

North County Solutions for Change, which is headquartered in Vista, also received $2,500 in funds. The organization provides temporary housing for homeless people, primarily women and children with the goal of helping them transition into permanent housing.

The Fallbrook Beautification Alliance, which oversees the plants on the South Mission Road median, was given $1,000 to help with maintenance.

The FUHS field hockey team and the Fallbrook Warriors Baseball Club each received $300 in funds.
