Angel Society donates $21,000 to local non-profits

FALLBROOK – A total of $21,000 in philanthropic funds was approved by the board of directors of the Angel Society of Fallbrook at its meetings in September and October.

The Fallbrook Music Society received the largest grant of $10,000 to help sponsor its student assembly program, “A Curriculum of Musical Experience.” The outreach program brings live, classical music to some 9,000 students in local elementary schools. It is designed to enhance students’ comprehension of great music as well as provides “an integrated, progressive knowledge of instruments,” according to Ann Murray, executive director of the Fallbrook Music Society.

The Fallbrook Food Pantry, which was formed in 1991 with the mission to provide nutritious food to needy individuals and families in the local community, was awarded $5,000 in funds. In addition to providing basic food items, the food pantry also distributes fresh produce monthly as well as commodities for seniors ages 60 and older.

The Fallbrook School of the Arts received $2,500 in funds to support its art education and scholarship programs. Also receiving $2,500 was the FUHS Marching Warriors Band’s assistance program for families of needy band members. The band enters up to six competitions a year, with program expenses costing upwards of $500, including entry fees, transportation, additional coaching staff, uniforms and instrument maintenance.

The Women’s Resource Center was awarded $2,000 towards its annual Spirit of Giving holiday event. The center is located in Oceanside and serves women and children who have been displaced by domestic violence and are working to rebuild their lives.

The Fallbrook Garden Club received $1,000 to help sponsor a program at La Paloma Elementary School for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The four-to-six week program provides hands-on instruction in a state-endorsed curriculum of harvest-to-table horticulture and nutrition.

Lastly, the FUHS Wrestling Association received $500 to help cover the cost of equipment and tournament fees.

The Angel Society of Fallbrook raises philanthropic funds through the operation of the Angel Shop, an all-volunteer run thrift store at 1002 S. Main Ave. Donations are welcome during regular business hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit http://www.theangelsociety.org.
