Border-wall prototype construction begins

SAN DIEGO – Construction began in Otay Mesa today on prototypes for a new border wall between the United States and Mexico, marking the start of a project that served as a bitterly divisive centerpiece in Donald Trump’s ascension to the White House.

Groundbreaking for eight proposed versions of the barrier – four made of concrete, the others from unspecified alternate materials – took place this morning in a remote area just north of the international line, about 1 1/2 miles east of the southern terminus of state Route 905, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
