Deadline approaches for Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest

FALLBROOK – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1924 has two essay programs which encourage student participation and are now taking entries.

Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12 from local schools, as well as home-schooled students. This year’s theme is “American History: Our Hope for the Future.” Awards for this contest begin on the local level with first place at $500, second place at $300 and third place at $200.

Patriot’s Pen is open to students in grades 6-8, and this year’s theme is “America’s Gift to my Generation.” Awards for this contest are $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third.

The deadline for both contests is Oct. 31. Entries must be submitted to Post 1924 at 1175 Old Stage Road, in Fallbrook. Students of winning essays will be recognized for their achievement at a luncheon held by the VFW Post. Scholarships and prizes are also offered at district, state and national levels. The national level scholarship includes a trip to the District of Columbia to accept awards.
