Fallbrook 10U baseball team wins 'Duel in December' title

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Warriors 10U baseball team finished its 2017 fall season in grand slam fashion, winning the "Duel in December" tournament hosted by Xtreme Diamond Sports.

Eight 10U teams participated in the two-day tourney held Dec. 2-3 at diamonds in Fallbrook and Escondido. On Day 1 of pool play the Warriors faced the San Diego Rebels and the San Diego Longhorns.

Fallbrook made quick work of the Rebels, winning 17-3 and taking a lot of momentum into a big afternoon affair with the Longhorns. The Warriors played an aggressive style of baseball which the Longhorns could not match, and a 15-1 victory gave Fallbrook the

No. 1 seed heading into Day 2.

"Our Warrior philosophy is to teach a very aggressive style of baseball," said Fallbrook coach Jimmy Dent. "Bunting, stealing, and executing the small things are a huge part of our game that creates a lot of havoc on the base paths."

All the Warriors had to do going into Day 2 was win the first game to earn a spot in the championship game. Fallbrook fell behind early to Vista Baseball Academy (VBA) but came back to defeat the Taipans 10-8.

In the championship game, the Warriors found themselves playing one of the best travel ball programs in San Diego County, the San Diego Stars. The Stars came out swinging and scored six runs in the first inning. Fallbrook answered right back by scoring five runs in its half of the opening frame.

The Warriors took command by scoring five runs in both the second and third innings and holding the Stars to two runs the rest of the way for a 15-8 victory that made Fallbrook champions of the "Duel in December."
