Fallbrook Music Society closes season with powerful vocal reflection

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Music Society closes out its 40th annual concert season 3 p.m., Sunday, April 22, with Kindra Scharich, mezzo-soprano, and accompanied by Dr. George Fee, piano, in "Reflecting Life in Leider," in the community room of the Fallbrook Public Library. The concert is free to the general public; no tickets are required.

A "lied," by literal definition, is a song in German, but the word is most often applied to German and Austrian settings of mid-18th through 19th century poetry for solo voice and piano.

"The 'lied' was at the heart of German musical life from the 1740s until early in the 20th century," Ann Murray, executive director of Fallbrook Music Society, said. "Showcasing this art form is the culmination of our mission, as people will have the opportunity to not only be entertained, but also to learn something about music history."

The concert features mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich and Dr. George Fee, piano. Scharich has been praised by The San Francisco Chronicle for her "exuberant vitality," "fearless technical precision," "deep-rooted pathos" and "irrepressible musical splendor." As a dedicated recitalist, she has given solo recitals at The American Composer's Forum, The Wagner Society, Lieder Alive and The La Jolla Athenaeum.

Pianist, scholar and lecturer George Fee has performed numerous solo recitals throughout the United States, as well as having presented dozens of master classes, lectures and workshops. He received his doctorate in piano performance from Indiana University, where he was a student of Menahem Pressler. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Oberlin College Conservatory and master's degree from the University of Wisconsin.

"Kindra and George are two of the best in this field and the program they have prepared is a selection of the art form's 'greatest hits.' We are truly lucky they were able to fit a trip to Fallbrook in their performance schedule!" Murray said.

The concert begins with a program preview, 2:30 p.m., that will feature a opportunity to get to know the performers and the art form. The concert will start promptly 3 p.m. and includes a free a reception immediately following the concert on the Poet's Patio.
