Local children raise funds for clean water in Kenya

FALLBROOK – With a population of 46 million, many Kenyans still rely on unimproved water sources and sanitation solutions. Few water service providers in Kenya provide continuous water supply, leaving people to find their own ways of searching for appropriate solutions to these basic needs. These challenges are especially evident in the rural areas and the urban slums.

As agents of change, Marshall and Alana Jordan of Fallbrook sold saltwater taffy and ME To WE Rafiki bracelets in order to raise funds for clean water in Kenya at Daniel's Market in Bonsall, March 17 and 18. In Swahili, "rafiki" means friend. The Jordans were representing a nonprofit organization, WE.org, which encourages children to participate in local and global issues by raising awareness and fundraising.

WE.org has extensive free resources and teaching tools available for students and educators. The organization "makes doing good, doable" by bringing people together to elicit change. People interested in making a difference are encouraged to have their local schools contact the WE Schools program manager at http://www.WE.org.

By being a part of this organization, children also have a chance to attend WE Day – an event and movement of young people leading local and global change. Tickets to this event will not be sold; attendees must earn their way through service.
