BONSALL – The CGA Mudslingers awarded High Point (first place) to three new champions at its show on April 14 at Stenerson Ranch in Bonsall. Bella McKenna of Carlsbad, Alexandria Kidd-Dragula of Fallbrook and Anne Shelton of Vista took top spots in Divisions AA, A and FC, respectively. Jenn Gosselin of Vista, who holds many of the club's arena records, placed first in the riding club's fastest division.
Riders ranging in ages from 5 to oh, somewhere north of 50, took to the arena to compete in some of gymkhana's toughest skill events, including Speed Ball and Figure 8 Flags. Gymkhana is an equestrian sport consisting of 13 events or patterns requiring excellent communication between horse and rider as well as a combination of speed and skill.
Figure 8 Flags requires a particularly high level of dexterity from the rider, as the rider must guide the horse with one hand while using the other to plant a flag and pull out a new flag in one sweep while turning around a barrel – and then repeat the action around a second barrel. Typically, there are several riders who receive a "no time," with flags dropped or entire barrels tipped over and riders failing to complete the event.
While it was a warm and dusty day, riders were in good spirits and first and second place winners were pleased to take home equine fly masks and fly spray as prizes, with all riders and horses collecting participation prizes. First and second place winners are listed below, with the fastest division ranked first.
The Bonsall riding club's next show will be a special two-day show on May 19-20 at Stenerson Ranch. The two-day show will include all 13 gymkhana patterns and first place prizes will include customized champion belt buckles. All are welcome to attend; spectating and parking are free.
