Fire agencies host educational event that includes free chipping, May 5

FALLBROOK – North County Fire Protection District, in partnership with Fallbrook Fire Safe Council, is hosting a Wildfire Community Preparedness Day educational event that will include free chipping services.

The event will be held 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 5, at Fire Station 4, 4375 Pala Mesa Drive in Fallbrook. Informational materials on wildfire preparedness will be available to the public, and firefighters will be on-site to answer questions and advise on preparing homes and property against a wildland fire.

Residents may bring their yard and tree trimmings and have them chipped at no cost. North County Fire is taking this opportunity to assist residents in reducing the threat of wildfire by giving them a way to remove their yard waste and provide defensible space around their homes. Removing weeds, brush and other vegetation creates a buffer that helps keep the fire away from homes and reduces the risk from flying embers.

Restrictions on the chipping services are as follows: no dirt, bamboo, palm fronds or branches larger than 4 inches in diameter. Chipping services are for private citizens only; load amounts may be limited. Please be prepared to offload trimmings as resources may be limited. Also note, the contractor reserves the right to refuse service.

Being ready for the next fire is the best defense. Visit North County Fire to find out how to be prepared at http://www.northcountyfireprotectiondistrict.org.
