Greenwood sets pool record with 538.80 points on 11 dives

Joseph Greenwood not only improved his school record for 11 dives during the Fallbrook April Dive Invitational meet April 14, but he also set the Fallbrook High School pool record.

"There's only a few more meets left, and I wanted to up the record high enough that hopefully I can have it for a while," said Greenwood, who is a senior at Oasis High School and competes for Fallbrook High School under the CIF San Diego Section's Multi-School Teams Status policy which allows athletes from certain schools to participate for a specified other team.

The pool record prior to the meet was 527.00 points; 2017 Granite Hills High School senior Cody Dreesen obtained that score during last year's Fallbrook April Dive Invitational.

The 2015 Fallbrook April Dive Invitational included a score of 518.05 points by Escondido Charter diver Taylor Pamplin, who was a senior in 2015 and became the first diver to exceed 500 points in the Fallbrook pool. Pamplin scored 519.65 points at the 11-Dive Championship Meet in May 2015, which still stands as the girls record. Dreesen became the first boy to exceed 500 points in the Fallbrook pool in May 2016 when his score of 519.50 points won that year's 11-Dive Championship Meet.

"It was definitely tough," said Greenwood. "I probably dove the best I ever dove in a competition."

Five judges scored each dive. The high and low score were discarded and the other three scores were added and multiplied by the degree of difficulty. Greenwood had no scores, counted or discarded, lower than 6.5 points and only two scores lower than 7.0 points which were included in his total. He had two discarded scores and one counted score of 9.0 points and 16 counted or discarded scores of 8.5 points.

"He was just solid all the way through," said meet organizer Sean Redmond, who is also one of Fallbrook High School's diving coaches along with Terry Erard.

Patrick Henry senior Jack Macceca took second place with 536.10 points, which gave him the pool record prior to Greenwood's 11th dive when Greenwood scored enough points for first place as well as the pool record. "This basically came down to the last dive," Redmond said.

"Definitely diving against him is a challenge, and he set the bar pretty high," Greenwood said.

Greenwood began his participation in the meet with a forward 1 1/2 somersault pike which has a 1.7 degree of difficulty. The middle scores were all 8.0 to give Greenwood 40.8 points for that dive.

The middle scores on Greenwood's back dive tuck were all 7.5, which multiplied by the 1.5 degree of difficulty gave Greenwood 33.75 points for that dive. Greenwood had counted scores of 7.0, 7.0, and 6.5 on his forward 2 1/2 somersault pike dive although the 2.6 degree of difficulty gave him a total of 53.3 points. Scores of 8.0, 8.5, and 8.5 and a 2.3 degree of difficulty for his back 1 1/2 somersault pike added 57.5 points to his score.

The forward 1 1/2 somersault 1 twist free dive is assessed a 2.2 degree of difficulty, and three middle scores of 8.5 apiece were worth 56.1 points for Greenwood. His reverse dive tuck with a 1.6 degree of difficulty gave him scores of 8.5, 8.5, and 9.0 to total 41.6 points for that dive. The inward dive pike with a 1.5 degree of difficulty received judges' scores of 8.5, 8.0, and 8.0 for 36.75 points. Scores of 6.5, 7.0, and 7.0 for Greenwood's reverse 1 1/2 somersault with a 2.1 degree of difficulty contributed 43.05 points.

Greenwood utilized 10 of the 11 dives he performed when he set his previous school record of 482.65 points March 17 at the Early Season Diving Invitational meet at the Fallbrook pool. During that meet his dives included a back 1 1/2 somersault half twist free which has a 2.1 degree of difficulty, and for the Fallbrook April Dive Invitational he replaced that with a back 1 1/2 somersault 1 1/2 twist dive with a 2.5 degree of difficulty. The three middle scores were all 8.5, which gave him 63.75 points for the dive. Greenwood's back 1 1/2 somersault half twist free March 17 earned him 49.35 points after scores of 8.0, 8.0, and 7.5.

An inward 1 1/2 somersault pike dive which has a 2.4 degree of difficulty was Greenwood's tenth dive. Three scores of 8.0 made the dive worth 57.6 points.

Macceca was before Greenwood in the rotation, but Greenwood was unaware of Macceca's final point total.

"I didn't know what the score was or how close it was," said Greenwood. "He was diving pretty well, and I assumed he was probably leading me."

Since Greenwood's first 10 dives had given him 484.20 points, he needed to exceed 51.90 points on his final dive to win the meet. That final dive, a forward 1 1/2 somersault two twists free dive, has a 2.6 degree of difficulty.

"I was pretty nervous because it was my last dive and up to that point I dove pretty well," Greenwood said.

Greenwood's primary desire was a clean dive, and that was reflected in three middle scores of 7.0. The degree of difficulty gave Greenwood 54.6 points for that dive.

Macceca thus held the pool record temporarily. "My thoughts were that Jack and I, we both dove pretty well," Greenwood said.

The CIF diving meet changed from an 11-dive format to a six-dive competition in 2007. Two divers exceeded 500 points at a CIF meet: Valhalla's Greg Louganis scored 566.76 points in 1977 and Grossmont's Bay Dobbins had a score of 503.40 points in 1993.

Greenwood had the pool record at the end of the meet. "I was pretty nervous and to get the pool record was pretty cool," he said.

"I honestly didn't know that I was going to win," Greenwood said. "When they called second and first I was pretty surprised."

Greenwood practices with the Crown Valley club in Laguna Niguel and is coached by Crown Valley instructors Curt Wilson and Dave Mickle as well as by Redmond and Erard. He expressed gratitude to all four of those diving coaches as well as to his parents, Robert and Tricia.

Sergio Zepeda, who is a Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School freshman, had the third-place score of 437.72 points. A total of eight boys participated in the boys 11-dive event.

Fallbrook's other diver in the boys 11-dive competition, sophomore Isai Soto, had the eighth-place score of 216.05 points.

A total of 40 divers competed in this year's Fallbrook April Dive Invitational.

"It went very well," Redmond said. "There were a lot of great divers. It was definitely very competitive all the way around."

Valhalla junior Izzy Shane scored 450.00 points to win the girls 11-dive event. Last year Shane won the Fallbrook April Dive Invitational with a score of 401.65 points on 11 dives. Granite Hills sophomore Alyssa Black took second in this year's meet with a score of 325.00 points. Mount Carmel freshman Sadie Wagner was third with 315.60 points.

A score of 313.10 points gave Fallbrook junior Kelly Hanlon fourth place among the 17 participants in the girls 11-dive event. "She just keeps improving," Redmond said.

Hanlon's score of 302.90 points at the Early Season Diving Invitational was her first score above 300 points.

Nine divers, including Fallbrook freshman Hayden Orchard, competed in the boys six-dive division. La Jolla High School senior Jordan Schultz won that event with a score of 216.85 points. Point Loma High School freshman Zachary Greene accumulated 187.20 points for second place. Orchard was sixth with 150.95 points; his Early Season Diving Invitational score was 137.95 points.

The girls six-dive competition featured eight athletes. Mount Carmel senior Erica Baldus was the winner with a score of 167.20 points. Del Norte freshman Delaney Howland took second place by accumulating 163.95 points. Two Fallbrook girls were in the six-dive event; freshman Cassidy Ewig had the sixth-place score of 120.40 points and sophomore Chiara Curnow took seventh place with 112.35 points. Ewig scored 114.25 points at the Early Season Diving Invitational; Curnow did not participate in that competition.
