Unlocked vehicles invite burglaries

FALLBROOK – During the month of April, there were 15 vehicle burglaries in the Fallbrook area. According to Lieutenant Mark Moreno of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, 14 of the vehicles were unlocked or showed no signs of forced entry.

"People need to remember to keep doors locked and keep valuables out of sight and secured," said Moreno. "It's a crime of opportunity. Thieves see something, the door's unlocked and in two seconds they grab it and they're gone."

Thieves had a big day May 22 when there were five vehicle burglaries and one stolen vehicle. Four of the six vehicles were unlocked or had no forced entry, and the losses included a notebook computer, jewelry, handbags, a backpack and tools.

"Hide your things and lock your doors and you lessen the chances of being a victim," said Moreno.
