Peterson heads roster of 90 FHS student-athletes to make academic team

Junior Audrey Peterson, sporting a 4.63 GPA, tops a list of 90 student-athletes from Fallbrook High making the San Diego Union-Tribune's spring sports All-Academic Team.

In order to make this All-Academic Team, which is for juniors and seniors, student-athletes must compete in a California Interscholastic Federation-approved varsity sport and maintain a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.0 or better.

According to the Union-Tribune, there were approximately 180,000 high school students in the San Diego Section for the 2017-2018 school year. The newspaper announced its spring sports All-Academic Team, June 6, and 8,279 student-athletes made the roster.

In a strong showing, 37 of Fallbrook High's athletes made the team with a GPA of 4.0 or higher. Standing out among the Fallbrook representatives based on GPA were: Peterson, who competed in track and maintained a GPA of 4.63; senior Nathan Carner, swimming, 4.60; junior Kaitlyn Callagher, swimming, 4.57; junior Eric Leon, volleyball, 4.57; junior Martin Sanchez, track, 4.56 and junior Karina Bulli, swimming, 4.53.

Thirty-nine of the Fallbrook student-athletes on the spring sports academic team had also made either the Union-Tribune's fall or winter sports academic teams, and six pulled off the hat trick of making all three teams.

The six Fallbrook students who hit the sports All-Academic Team trifecta for fall, winter and spring teams are Bulli who was a member of the tennis, soccer and swimming teams, junior Hannah DiVerde for cross county, soccer and swimming, Peterson for cross country, soccer and track, senior Gissell Rivera for cross country, soccer, track, junior Gabby Vazzana for volleyball, water polo and swimming and junior Jessica Wilbert for cross country, basketball, track.
