Christopherson, Dewhirst play in senior all-star game

San Diego County's Senior All-Star Game for high school volleyball is actually two matches: one for the girls and one for the boys. This year's Senior All-Star Game matches took place June 1, at Miramar College and included two Fallbrook High School players.

Emma Christopherson was one of 13 players on the girls red team which was coached by Bobbie Joe Stall of San Marcos High School and Kara Hanes of Rancho Bernardo High School. The red team defeated the 15-player blue team coached by Roni Greenwood of Scripps Ranch High School and Connie Halfaker of Ramona High School in three games.

Miles Dewhirst was among the 14 players on the boys blue team guided by Classical Academy head coach Joe Milo, Classical Academy assistant coach Josiah Cruz and Coronado High School coach George Cavaco. The 14 players on the boys red team were coached by Todd Goodwin of San Pasqual High School and Deborah Isaia of Montgomery High School. The red team defeated the blue team in five games.

"It was fabulous," Chip Patterson, head coach of both the girls and boys volleyball team at Fallbrook High, said. "It was very impressive to see."

Christopherson played in the second and third sets of the girls match.

"She played two of the three matches with some of the best girls in San Diego County," Patterson said. "She got more playing time than most of the other girls."

Although Christopherson was an outside hitter during her junior and senior seasons, she played as a middle blocker for the all-star match.

"She had some good blocks," Patterson said. "Hitting was hard because the timing wasn't really there. They only practiced one time."

The middle blocker position was not an obstacle for Christopherson.

"She was able to get there and she got some good blocks," Patterson said. "I was extremely proud of her. I think she really wanted to produce effectively."

Christopherson will play collegiate volleyball at South Dakota State University.

Dewhirst was an outside hitter during the CIF season and a right side hitter for the all-star match.

"He stepped up and he played right side," Patterson said. "He had two good hits, and he had one good block."

Dewhirst only played in the first two games.

"His shoulder started hurting, so it wasn't the best thing to push through," Patterson said.

The boys red team won the first two games and the boys blue team captured the ensuing two sets to force a fifth game to 15 points. The red team won that final contest by a 15-13 score with the final point being scored after a long rally.

"It was a really good match," Patterson said. "It was real exciting."

Ironically, Fallbrook reached the CIF Division III championship match and lost in five games after Classical Academy won the first two sets and the Warriors came back to win the third and fourth games.

"I'm proud of him," Patterson said of Dewhirst. "He came, and he represented for his school."

Dewhirst will continue his scholastic volleyball at Concordia University in Irvine.
