TEMECULA - Camp Pendleton firefighters, along with North County Fire, were fighting a brush fire that broke out in the central area of the Marine Corps base on Sunday. By 12:30 p.m. Sunday, fire officials reported the fire was fully contained at 1,000 acres.

Base officials tweeted around noon that a three-acre fire had broken out on Wilcox Range, and an hour later, they announced the fire had spread to about 100 acres, and it was at 600 acres by 3:30 p.m. By 7 p.m., the updated revealed that the fire had expanded to 1,000 acres, but firefighters had 50 percent containment.

Early Monday morning, officials reported that crews were working to clear vegetation around the fire.

It hasn't been made clear if any structures were threatened on base. North County Fire Protection District officials said there was no threat outside the base.
