Community Collaborative for Health and Wellness meeting open to public

FALLBROOK – The August meeting of the Fallbrook Community Collaborative for Health and Wellness (CCHW) will feature Geri Schmotzer, speaking about cervical cancer and the program “Acepta: Cervical Cancer Prevention for Latinas.” The CCHW will meet Monday, Aug. 20, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Fallbrook Public Utility District (FPUD) board room, 990 E. Mission Road.

Schmotzer is a local nurse who has received grant funding for this special project. The topic is of particular concern because the rate of cervical cancer in Hispanic women is 44 percent higher than non-Hispanic white women and they are more likely to die from this disease second only to African-American women. Hispanic women face a multitude of barriers to screening including access to health care and a lack of knowledge about the disease and screening practices.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend. The CCHW is facilitated by the Fallbrook Regional Health District and Fallbrook Smiles Project, a local nonprofit program funded by the FRHD Community Health Contracts.
