Fallbrook Villa FC wins title in Coronado

The Fallbrook Villa FC Boys 2008-Elite team bounced back from a loss in its tournament opener to win the Coronado Crown City Classic championship, July 29.

Fallbrook Villa FC dropped a 3-2 decision to Bonita Matrix in the first game of the tourney, July 28, but then rattled off three straight victories to earn the title at the tournament for under-11 boys teams.

"Basically, I felt like we came out of a little bit nervous," said coach Youki Yasuda of the loss in the opener. "For most of these kids it was only their second tournament and they've only been together for about five months."

The team, made-up primarily of players recruited from Fallbrook Youth Soccer League recreational teams, rebounded to defeat C.V. Matrix 290 Plaza 08 by a score of 7-2 in its second game, July 28.

Fallbrook Villa FC then defeated Empire Ayala 5-1 in its first game, July 29, to earn a spot in the championship game against Bonita Matrix. Since the team would have to kill more than four hours before they played the title game, Yasuda said his main concern was keeping his children under control.

"I was just nervous I wouldn't be able to keep the kids focused," said Yasuda. "Kids at this age can get rowdy and want to go goof off, but the kids were able to listen and stay focused."

Fallbrook Villa FC avenged the opening-game loss to Bonita Matrix by handily defeating that squad in the championship match 7-0.

"The final game went perfectly," said Yasuda. "The kids dominated possession of the ball. We probably had the ball 75 to 80 percent of the game."

Fallbrook Villa FC was led offensively in the tournament by Talon Best, who scored 10 goals, and Preston Ramirez, who tallied seven goals. On the defensive side, Yasuda said rookies Gavin Gallegos and Yosgar Ruiz both stood out, as did rookie goalies Elijah Heesen and Nathan Lopez. Heesen and Lopez split time in goal throughout the tournament, with Heesen playing the first half of games and Lopez the second.

"We do preseason tournaments to prepare for the season, and I was just really happy with the way this turned out," said Yasuda.

Yasuda said Fallbrook Youth Soccer League/Fallbrook Villa FC will host an opening day celebration Saturday, Aug. 18, at Ingold Sports Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are invited to the fundraising event, which will feature food, fun and games, mini-tournaments and the opportunity to meet the teams.
