The Phantom returns to San Diego

While this is a new touring production of the famous opera let it be said that this production is visually spectacular.

It's hard to believe 32 years have passed since its opening in New York City. "The Phantom of the Opera" stormed Broadway with Michael Crawford in the leading role.

It is one of few shows that seem to be bullet proof. Regardless of who plays The Phantom, one is never disappointed with the production.

As is again in this case. "The Phantom" in this tour is played by Quentin Oliver Lee with such swag and vigor it is hard to recall any other in the role even Mr. Crawford.

Lee's rich and lusty baritone elicits sexual power as it drips with promises of passion which earns him sympathy.

His prey is the "Angel of Music," Christine Daae played by Eva Tavares. Ms. Tavares proves that size does not matter when it comes to talent. She is thrilling to watch as she explores her choices.

Playing next in the top three is always Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny. Handsome and willing to die for the fair Christine, Jordan Craig left nothing out in his strong performance.

The comedic relief is shared between the new owners of the Paris Opera house, Monsieur Firmin (David Foley Jr.) and Monsieur Andre (Rob Lindley). Their routines are remindful of an old vaudevillian skit - richly delivered with impeccable timing.

Too often the recipient of their barbs, leading lady Madame Giry (Kristie Dale Sanders) demonstrates her unwillingness to step down as the "Prima Donna" and demands the leading role in the next show. She and her onstage lead, Ubaldo Piangi (Phumzile Sojola), are right on the mark with their performances.

The cast size is mentioned somewhere at over 50 for this quality re-make of what is fast becoming a theatre standard. Everything about this production is superb. The set is unique, the costumes are luxurious, and the sound and lighting are top notch.

"Phantom of the Opera" is playing now at the Civic Theatre at 3rd Avenue and B Streets. Tickets are selling out fast. Box Office: (619) 570-1100 or go online at http://www.BroadwaySD.com. It closes on Sunday, September 2, 2018. Prepaid parking can be had at the Wells Fargo Bank at 4th and B for only $8.00. Rated 9.75 out of 10.
