FAA to welcome watercolorist McCullough

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Art Association announced that watercolor artist Eileen McCullough will be demonstrating at the Saturday, Sept. 15, meeting at The Fallbrook Women's Club, 238 W. Mission Road.

The meeting will begin 9:30 a.m. and include a critique of members' paintings, one work each, by the guest artist until 10:15 a.m., followed by her demonstration. The public is invited.

McCullough is a plein air watercolor artist. She lives in Huntington Beach and has made her hometown her favorite subject matter. Her paintings capture everyday life, hiking through the Bolsa Chica wetlands, dining outdoors and walking dogs in Central Library park. The artist said she strongly believes that a connection to the subject is imperative for a successful painting.

A full-time watercolor artist, McCullough developed her style while taking classes and workshops. Her paintings are saturated with bold color and lyrical brushwork.

"My formal training as an artist began very young," McCullough said. "My father was a watercolor artist and would take me out on location to paint. By the time I was 10, I had a sketchbook full of my drawings."

In 1982, McCullough moved to Southern California to attend the University of Long Beach. After graduating, she made Huntington Beach her permanent home.

"While I loved my new home, I was at a loss as what to paint," McCullough said.

This difficulty changed for the artist when she had her first child in 2000, she said. Her time was spent playing outdoors with her son, and she discovered the wonderful parks, nurseries and nature centers Huntington Beach has to offer, she said.

McCullough showed her watercolors this summer at the prestigious Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach.

After McCoullough's demonstration, she will conduct a watercolor workshop, 1-4 p.m. The workshop is open to beginners and advanced painters, members and non-members. The cost for members is $40 with $35 going to the artist and $5 to FAA, and the cost for non-members is $50 with $45 going to the artist and $5 to FAA. To register, call Carol Reardon at (760) 731-6677. Participants need to register in advance by sending in checks to reserve a spot. Reardon will email participants a list of supplies to bring and the class agenda.
