County partners with Lyft to drive disaster preparedness

San Diego County is vulnerable to many types of emergencies: fires, floods, earthquakes and more. These disasters can strike at any time, and residents should all be prepared to keep their families safe. But a 2017 survey conducted by the county found only half of San Diego County residents are prepared to evacuate their homes within 15 minutes, and only 38 percent have an emergency plan.

To help drive disaster preparedness, the county's Office of Emergency Services is partnering with Lyft for National Preparedness Month to reward San Diegans for taking the first – free – step toward preparing for emergencies.

The first 2,000 residents to register for AlertSanDiego starting Sept. 1 will get a code for $10 off one Lyft ride within San Diego County. A personal ride code will be emailed to each of the 2,000 residents no later than Sept. 30 and can be used at any time through the end of the year.

AlertSanDiego is the system fire, law enforcement and other agencies use to send emergency alerts by phone to San Diego County residents and businesses. Calls include critical information and protective actions such as evacuations. All listed and unlisted landlines are already in this system; however, cell phones have to be registered. Sign up a cellphone number, Voice over Internet Protocol phone number or email with AlertSanDiego to ensure that a notification will be sent to these devices when a disaster affects the area.

Please note, this ride credit is for regular use, not for emergency situations. Separately, Lyft continues to work within San Diego County through its Relief Rides program, responding during natural disasters and other crises while extending Lyft's reach to others in need.

Be award of these promotion details. It is one Lyft code per person, per address or phone number. Code is unique to each registrant and may only be used within San Diego County by new and existing Lyft users. Ride codes will be sent out via email and mail by no later than Sept. 30 and are valid for use until Dec. 31.
