Overnight Caltrans closures go affect state Route 163

SAN DIEGO - Stretches of state Route 163 will be closed beginning Monday, Sept. 17 and continuing through Friday, Sept. 20 morning for maintenance work and to reduce the height of the overpass at Friars Road, Caltrans announced.

The roads will be closed during night hours only.

Crews will close all southbound lanes of SR-163 between Genesee Avenue

and Interstate 8 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, according to Caltrans. All northbound lanes of SR-163 between Genesee Avenue and I-8 will be closed from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Crews will begin closing some freeway lanes at 7 p.m. with the full lane closures expected to be in place by 11 p.m., according to Caltrans.

The eastbound and westbound I-8 connector ramps to northbound will also be closed, according to Caltrans.

The eastbound Friars Road on-ramp to northbound SR-163 will be closed, but the on-ramp to northbound SR-163 from Genesee Avenue will remain open during the work.

The $40 million construction project will widen the overpass at Friars Road on SR-163, fix freeway off-ramps and on-ramps and lower the height clearance of the Friars Road overpass to 15 feet, according to Caltrans. An auxiliary lane on southbound SR-163 just north of the Friars Road off-ramp will also be constructed.
