The Bonsall High School girls volleyball team had its first home game of the season Sept. 5, facing off against Health Sciences High School.

Mia Madrid, second-year player and captain of the BHS team, said this year will be a lot of fun. The team is holding longer and more strict practices and prioritizing effective communication and team bonding.

In the first set, the Surgeons held a small lead, earning 20 points before they were surpassed by the Legionnaires, who won 25-21.

In the second set, BHS volleyball team members said they felt confident despite being behind for the majority of the set. It was neck-and-neck for the final few points, and BHS won by two points.

Winning the third set would mean a quick victory for the Legionnaires, and the two teams alternated lead position every few points. Bonsall High won the set 25-23.

"I am very happy and proud," Madrid said. "We had a lot of fun and that's what counts."

The girls chanted "Allons-y legion," which means "Let's go legion!" in French, serving tribute to coach Hendy's French background.

"We made a few small mistakes that are easy to clean up, but the girls were able to improve dramatically during the game and it was a good match-up," Hendy said. "We look forward to playing them again."

Many students and family members came out to support the team, including alumni Lance Starks and Alexandria Williams. Starks described it as the "best game I have ever witnessed. The girls were down by a lot, but they came back. Then they swept the enemy team 3-0 and won the game."
