Taylor honored with five San Diego Press Club awards

SAN DIEGO – Nathalie Taylor, a Village News and Sourcebook Magazine affiliate, was honored with five awards at the San Diego Press Club's 45th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards Banquet held Oct. 30 at Jacobs Center Market Creek.

In a highly competitive, record-entry year, Taylor took home one first place award, three second place awards and one third place award. Since 2004 she has won 71 San Diego County journalism awards. Four of the articles were published in the Village News, and one was a 2018 Sourcebook Magazine article (Village News Inc.). Taylor also took most of the photographs that accompanied the articles.

Taylor's first place award was in the Travel/Domestic category for the story, "Cannons, Cicadas and Sweet Tea, – A West Virginia Encounter" (Village News – 12/28/17). An excerpt: "The emerald-hued rivers meandered on, a light breeze tapped the leaves in the trees, and the birds sang sweetly. The cannons on the hill had long been stilled and told nothing of the battles of 1862. My mother and I sat on the bench – in silence – for a very long time. We were both in awe of the fact that her great-grandfather camped here, and fought here, 155 years ago. But, no ghosts of cannon fire shattered our peace that day."

The writer took second in Travel/International with, "Bold and Beguiling Prague" (Village News – 2/8/18). An excerpt: "There was an uncommon juxtaposition of sounds – the echo of scrambling traffic and a myriad of bird songs. From my viewpoint, high above the city, a thousand years of history reached to every direction – each building with a story to tell – each building with inexpressible secrets."

Another second place award came in the Review/Restaurant category for "'127 West Social House' – A Phoenix Rising from the Ashes" (Village News – 4/19/18). She told the amazing story of restaurateur Faro Trupiano's triumph over a fire that destroyed the interior of his establishment.

Second place was also granted to Taylor in the Review/Entertainment category for, "'Oh What a Night!' 'Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons' Entertain Fair Attendees with Melodies and Memories" (Village News – 7/8/17).

In the Magazine/Multicultural category Taylor took third place for her story, "'Water of Life' – Changing Lives in Cambodia," which was published in the 2018 Sourcebook Magazine.

Taylor, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, was seated on the Alumni Advisory Board for Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts from 2011 to 2018. Since 2015, she has been a San Diego Press Club Honorary Committee member. Taylor has been a Village News affiliate since 2003, and free-lances through her business, Krona Publications.
