History-making Miller off to good start at Del Mar

Less than a week after making history at the 2018 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, Bonsall-based trainer Peter Miller celebrated opening day of Del Mar's Fall Racing Festival by saddling two winners at the seaside track Nov. 9.

Miller, who in 2017 at Del Mar earned his first Breeders' Cup victories when Stormy Liberal won the $1 million Turf Sprint and Roy H captured the $1.5 million Sprint, saw those two runners repeat in those rich races at Churchill Downs Nov. 3.

Miller became the first trainer in the 35 years of the Breeders' Cup to win the same two championship races with the same horses in back-to-back years. Stormy Liberal and Roy H both call the San Luis Rey Training Center in Bonsall home.

Miller loves racing at Del Mar and has earned five training championships at the historic track. He began defense of his 2017 fall meeting title by winning two races Nov. 9, taking the second race of the meeting with Eskenforadrink and the fifth race with Mongolian Window.

Eskenforadrink, who was based with Miller's string of horses at Santa Anita prior to shipping to Del Mar, won a seven-furlong maiden claiming race by 3 1/4 lengths under jockey Heriberto Figueroa and paid $4.20 as the even-money favorite. The victory, accomplished in 1:25.22, cured a case of "seconditis" for Eskenforadrink, a 3-year-old filly who had been the runner-up in her three most recent starts.

Mongolian Window, a 3-year-old filly who has been based at San Luis Rey since July, earned her second career victory when she posted a wire-to-wire win in a one-mile starter allowance race on the turf. Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, Mongolian Window crossed the wire in 1:35.04 and paid $8.60 as the 3-1 second choice in the betting.

The wins by Eskenforadrink and Mongolian Window increased Miller's career victory total to 998. Del Mar's Fall Racing Festival continues through Dec. 2 – racing is presented Thursday through Sunday with first post at 12:30 p.m. – and Miller figures to reach milestone victory No. 1,000 well before the season comes to a close.

Veteran San Luis Rey trainer Edward Freeman also earned a win during opening weekend of the Fall Racing Festival as he captured the first race Nov. 12 with the 2-year-old filly Staythirstymyamigo. A 10-1 outsider ridden by Ruben Fuentes, Staythirstymyamigo took the six-furlong sprint by 1 1/4 lengths over even-money favorite Midnight Miracle (ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens) and paid $23.60 after stopping the timer in 1:11.57.
