Pupils' artwork featured in water calendar

FALLBROOK – Fourth-grade students from Fallbrook schools put pens, crayons and watercolors to paper to color the best and brightest water-conservation posters. But of the 200 posters colored, only 14 made it into the 2019 "Be Water Smart" calendar.

Twelve of those winning images appear inside the calendar – one for each of the 12 months of the year. Another image is printed on the cover, and the other represents January 2020.

The calendars are now available free at the Fallbrook Public Utility District office, while supplies last.

The pupils' colorful images vividly depict the contest's theme. FPUD judges scrutinized the entries to find the most eye-catching images illustrating the need for saving water.

The Fallbrook artists were recognized at the Dec. 10 board of directors meeting, and each received a gift card to Walmart, school supplies, free food at McDonalds and a signed certificate of commendation. The students' artwork will be matted and framed for them.

America Perez Martinez of Fallbrook STEM Academy earned first place. Stephania Miranda and Hudson Quinn of Maie Ellis Elementary took second and third, respectively. The cover artwork was done by Gabriel Velasco of La Paloma Elementary. The four students also won a T-shirt with their winning artwork printed on it.

The annual contest is open only to fourth-grade students in the utility district because they learn about water conservation and the water cycle in the fourth grade. Pupils from Fallbrook STEM Academy, William H. Frazier, La Paloma, Maie Ellis and Live Oak elementary schools submitted entries. The contest objective is to find the most eye-catching images illustrating the need for saving water.

All 14 pieces of artwork will be displayed on the FPUD website. They will also be displayed in the FPUD board room for a year.

In addition to Martinez, Miranda, Quinn and Velasco, the other winners are: Magaly Maldonado, Magdaleny Caralampio, Antonio Jesus, Maria Ordonez-Rodriguez, Mariana Jimenez and America Giles of Maie Ellis Elementary; Jordyn Jones of William H. Frazier Elementary; Connor Siegler, Lexie Graves and Wendy Sanchez Hernandez of La Paloma Elementary.

Submitted by Fallbrook Public Utilities District.
