When the Sullivan Middle School and Bonsall High School students return from winter break the leak in the gymnasium roof will likely be fixed.
The Bonsall Unified School District board voted 5-0, Dec. 13, to approve an agreement with Boyce’s Roofing and Repair, in which the school district will pay the Oceanside company $29,995 for the labor portion of the roofing restoration project. The district’s Nov. 8 board meeting included a 5-0 vote to take advantage of the state’s California Multiple Award Schedule contract with The Garland Company, which allows local agencies to “piggyback” on a previously awarded contract with a specified unit price; the district approved the purchase of the roofing material for $27,895.62.
“We decided that we just had to redo the roof,” Bill Pickering, the district’s assistant superintendent for business and administrative services, said.
The gymnasium has experienced leaks during rain. Attempts by district maintenance staff to correct that situation have been unsuccessful.
“The roof was leaking somewhere,” Pickering said.
The roofing material is older than its expected useful life period. A complete roofing restoration is scheduled for the summer vacation period in 2019.
An inspection to determine the exact source of the leak would have required removal of portions of the roof.
“There’s no way that could all happen in time,” Pickering said.
The leak is believed to be in a membrane, which Boyce’s Roofing and Repair will replace.
“A whole new membrane is going on,” Pickering said. “It’s a lot cheaper than bidding out the whole project. The way we piecemealed it we were able to get the best of both worlds.”
