Vazzana, Wallace on all-division first team

The county’s girls water polo coaches have all-division teams, and the Division II first team included Fallbrook players Gabby Vazzana and Sophia Wallace.

“That to me was a surprise,” Fallbrook coach Sean Redmond said.

The all-division first team had seven members and the all-division second team had seven girls. Poway, which defeated Fallbrook in the CIF Division II championship game, had three players on the first team with Poway goalkeeper Mya Davis being selected as the Division II player of the year. Grossmont and Granite Hills, who faced each other in a quarterfinal match, each had one player on the first team.

“That shows the recognition that our girls have and their ability,” Redmond said of having two players on the all-division first team. “The other coaches from around the county recognized it.”

Vazzana, who is a senior, played primarily set defense. She had 174 steals, 56 goals and 58 assists during the season.

Wallace is a junior who was primarily a driver while also playing other positions during the season. She scored 64 goals and added 29 assists and 62 steals.

Fallbrook posted a 5-0 record in Valley League water polo matches this season to win the league championship. The Warriors had an overall record of 19-10 including two CIF playoff wins and the loss in the CIF championship game.
