Holiday Bowl to feature Pac-12, ACC teams beginning in 2020

SAN DIEGO - Organizers of the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl formally announced on Thursday, Aug. 15 that teams from the Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast conferences will play in the postseason college football game beginning in 2020.

The game's current six-year contracts with the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences are set to run out after the 2019-2020 college football season, leading to the change for next year's game. Teams from the Pac-12 and ACC will face off for six years in San Diego's annual bowl game. In past year's the game has also featured teams from the Western Athletic Conference and the Big 12.

The game's new contract with the ACC was first reported earlier this year but had not yet been announced by the game's local organizers.

"The SDDCU Holiday Bowl is known for high-scoring, exciting finishes,'' Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said. "Pitting the Pac-12 up against the ACC, two of the highest-scoring conferences in the country is going to feed perfectly into our reputation.''

No team in the 15-school ACC has ever participated in the Holiday Bowl while the Pac-12 has played in 21 consecutive Holiday Bowl games and 24 total. Notre Dame, a school with an independent football team, is also eligible for ACC bowl games if they are not in one of the playoff games for the national college football championship.

Currently, the Holiday Bowl features the third-highest Pac-12 team and the fourth-highest Big Ten team in each conference's standings. Last year's game featured teams from Northwestern University and the University of Utah. The game's organizers did not indicate which teams from the Pac-12 and ACC will play in the game from 2020 to 2025.

"We are pleased to partner with the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl and look forward to the annual postseason match up with the Pac-12,'' ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. "The Holiday Bowl provides an outstanding destination and national platform for our student-athletes, teams and fans and we look forward to this new relationship.''

This year's Holiday Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 27 at San Diego's SDCCU Stadium. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at HolidayBowl.com .
