6 teens arrested for fight at Escondido park

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Six teenagers were in custody today for their involvement in a fatal stabbing during an alleged gang brawl at an Escondido park.

Patrol officers responding to reports of a fight involving about 20 people at Grove Park on East Mission Avenue about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday found Mauricio Renteria, 37, suffering from multiple stab wounds and head trauma, according to police.

Medics took the Escondido resident to Palomar Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Lt. Chris Lick said.

The suspects, who range in age from 14 to 17, were booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of murder and participating in a criminal street gang, Lick said. Their names were withheld because they are minors.

Details on the youths' arrests and how they were identified as suspects in the case were not immediately available.
