Daughters of the American Revolution passes 1 million members

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Daughters of the American Revolution Oct. 15, surpassed 1 million members since it's organization in 1890. That special member was Amy Dickinson.

Dickinson is best known for her nationally syndicated advice column, "Ask Amy," which succeeded the Ann Landers advice column that ran for almost 50 years. Her column is carried in more than 150 newspapers with an estimated 22 million readers daily. Dickinson is also a best-selling author, a featured panelist on a National Public Radio comedy quiz show and a sought-after public speaker.

"This milestone is a testament to the timeless relevancy of our mission," President General of the DAR, Denise VanBuren said. "We celebrate all of our 1 million dedicated DAR members and their contributions. We also look very much forward to welcoming the next million women who will ensure that National Society's mission endures into the future."

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded to preserve the memory and spirit of those who contributed to securing American independence.

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. DAR is one of the world's largest and most active women's service organizations with nearly 185,000 current members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide. These members passionately carry out the timeless mission of promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism.

Women who are interested in honoring their own Revolutionary War patriot ancestor and becoming involved in a network of community service oriented women of all ages and backgrounds can learn more about DAR membership at http://www.dar.org/membership, or by contacting the local chapter Regent Pat Hall at [email protected].
