Athlete of the Week: Love of competition drives Jarvis

According to senior Sonsi Jarvis, she's had a love of competition since the second grade.

"I have always been competitive," she said. "I love the thrill of the game and the thrill of doing really well. Competing on the court makes me feel like this is what I am meant to be doing. I think what inspires me to compete is the satisfaction of playing well and it brings out a side of me that is not seen elsewhere."

Jarvis' competitive spirit is why she was chosen as Athlete of the Week by the Village News.

According to Fallbrook Union High School Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach Jason Dale, Jarvis is a powerful hitter and, perhaps more importantly, captain of the team.

"Everyone looks up to her and she can single-handedly change the course of a game," said Dale.

On the season, she has a team-leading 129 kills to go with 15 serving aces and 127 digs.

Jarvis said she had always competed in multiple sports since the second grade, she even lettered in basketball and softball during her freshman year.

But since then, she's starred only for the Warriors volleyball team. She's been on varsity for three years now.

"This season has been stressful, but it has also been a great learning experience," said Jarvis. "Considering the lack of experience that comes with such a young team, we have been performing incredibly well."

Overall, the Warriors have a record of 12-26 and are 3-7 in league play.

She said she knew with a young roster there could be trying times, but she had a goal to improve the team's "drive and confidence, and to work efficiently together on the court."

Personally, Jarvis said she is working on keeping her fierce competitive drive in check.

"(My goal is to) keep a stable head when playing and not let my emotions get the best of me," she said. "For having taken on new roles and facing new challenges, I feel like I have done pretty well."

Jarvis hasn't decided whether she will continue to play volleyball after she graduates in June and hasn't settled on plans after high school.

She said she wanted to thank her parents and coaches for helping her along the way.
