San Diego State student dies after attending fraternity event, university announces

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Dylan Hernandez, a 19-year-old San Diego State University freshman who was injured last week after an on-campus fraternity event, has died, SDSU President Adela de la Torre said Monday.

Hernandez was hospitalized Thursday after campus police were contacted about his need for medical attention, according to the SDSU Police Department. Hernandez died late Sunday evening and his family gave the university permission to share the information, de la Torre said.

"As a mother, nothing can replace the profound loss of a child, and the devastating heartbreak the family and their loved ones are experiencing," she wrote in an all-campus email. "All of us in the Aztec family are sending our prayers, and are here to support the family."

A friend of the Hernandez family created a fundraising campaign on the website GoFundMe Monday to support the family. The campaign, which is still accepting donations at bit.ly/2CvE0GW, had blown past its $1,000 goal to raise more than $6,500 as of 2 p.m.

The university suspended all activities by its Interfraternity Council on Friday after Hernandez was hospitalized. The university has not given a cause for his hospitalization or death. University officials have also launched a webpage regarding the incident, sdsu.edu/investigation, which will be updated with information as it becomes available.

The suspension impacts more than 1,400 members of 14 council fraternities, but does not affect the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the College Panhellenic Association or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council or the chapters affiliated with those organizations.

The IFC consists of Alpha Epsilon Pi, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Theta Chi and Zeta Beta Tau, according to the school's website.
