FALLBROOK – Fallbrook was well represented at the "Sierra Winter Classic" in Porterville in the San Joaquin Valley, Jan. 18-19. The Porterville Steer show is an excellent way for ag students to get experience showing their animal.
The show is now host to over 300 head of cattle, 200 exhibitors and their family members from throughout the State of California and beyond. The show is held every year over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Observance weekend.
The local members of the National FFA Organization worked together to groom their steers and practice techniques for showing well. They were judged in two categories.
Showmanship is where the exhibitor is judged on their control in handling their animal as well as the steer's cleanliness, grooming and presentation.
Market is where their animal's confirmation and physical characteristics are judged. The judge may ask the exhibitor questions about their animal and usually gives advice on how to improve.
The families camped together and had a great time.
Due to some last-minute technical difficulties, the official results for this event weren't available at press time.
A group also attended the Southern Arizona International Livestock Association show at Yuma, Arizona, fairgrounds, The Yuma SAILA show included beef, goat, sheep. Local participants represented Fallbrook High School FFA Beef group.
