Super Tuesday: Sanders wins California, Campa-Najjar, Issa head to general election for 50th

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders won Tuesday night in the California primary, far and away the biggest Super Tuesday prize.

As of press time, about 31% of votes counted had gone to Sanders. Former Vice President Joe Biden was a distant second with 22% of the vote, with New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Senator Elizabeth Warren far behind. Warren, with 12% of the vote, was barely ahead of Pete Buttigieg — who dropped out of the race on Sunday — in California, a bad sign for her campaign.

In a closely-watched local race, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar was in first place in the 50th Congressional District, according to early returns; Republicans Darrell Issa and Carl DeMaio were splitting the conservative vote in the heavily-Republican district, which includes Fallbrook, but Issa was consistently leading DeMaio by a couple percentage points while ballots continued to be counted early Wednesday morning. While it was too early to tell which Republican candidate would ultimately end up in the second-place spot as of press time, it’s nearly certain that one of them will go on to face Campa-Najjar in the general election.

San Diego County voters appeared poised to approve Measure A, which would require voter approval for any amendment to the county general plan to increase population density for rural or semi-rural areas by more than five homes. A very slight majority of voters cast their ballots in favor of the measure, returns showed Wednesday morning.

And voters also looked to be opposed to approving the related Measure B, which would authorize changes to the county general plan to allow construction of the Newland Sierra project west of Interstate 15 and south of Bonsall. That measure was losing with about 57% opposed as of press time.

Here are the results for those contests and others Village News has been watching as of 12:15 am. Wednesday.
