Wild Wonders introduces Poquito, the baby paca

BONSALL – The new year at Wild Wonders began with this little bundle of joy, Poquito, who was born to Pico and Piña, the two pacas that call Wild Wonders their forever home.

Pacas are very unusual rodents that are found in Central and South America, and their unique markings make them easy to identify. They primarily eat fruit, but they also enjoy nuts and seeds. Swimming is one of their favorite things to do, which is why their habitat comes complete with its own pool.

Pacas typically produce only one offspring at a time and carry them for four months. Compare that with mice who have litters with 3-12 babies and carry them for 19-23 days, and it's easy to see why pacas are considered unusual rodents. Additionally, these little fellows are born with their eyes open and ready to go.

Pico and Piña are "creature teachers" that teach about the importance of our rain forests in "The Emerald Forest" education program at Wild Wonders. Poquito will join them when he is older.

Wild Wonders is a facility in Bonsall, where kids and adults can "tame"

their curiosity for wildlife. Through live interactive programs and tours at its site or off-site, its wildlife educators and 120 animal ambassadors will take guests on a dynamic adventure they will not forget. Its goal is to excite the public and foster a desire to preserve and learn about wildlife and the important role they play in the planet everyone shares with them.
