Jaguars spoil Warriors' football opener

Valley League football play began March 19, and the game in Valley Center ended as a 28-0 Valley Center High School victory over Fallbrook High School.

"Just did not execute very well," said Fallbrook coach Troy Everhart.

The Jaguars scored 14 points in each half and would have led by an additional touchdown had Thomas McSheehy not recovered a fumble on the Fallbrook 10-yard-line. "That was a huge stand for the kids, I thought," Everhart said. "We had a nice goal line stand."

Fallbrook also recovered a Valley Center fumble on the Jaguars' opening drive of the second half. Trent Pack gave the Warriors possession of the ball on the Valley Center 10-yard-line.

"I think defensively we played really hard," Everhart said. "The kids did a fantastic job."

Fallbrook's red zone possession ended in a missed field goal, although Everhart cited a bad hold rather than a failure of kicker Josh Gomez. "We kicked the ball fairly well," Everhart said. "I thought that was solid."

Gomez also handled punts and the second-half kickoff for Fallbrook. Everhart noted that the transition to special teams never required the use of a timeout. "The kids did a nice job," he said.

The lack of mental mistakes pleased Everhart even if the lack of success during key plays didn't. "Just got to get better," he said.

The Jaguars' previous match was in the 2019 CIF Division II playoffs. Valley Center had a 4-1 Valley League record in 2019.

Fallbrook travels to Ramona for tomorrow's Valley League game.
