Balboa Park will be the subject of garden club program

FALLBROOK – Lucy A. Warren will be the speaker at the Fallbrook Garden Club Oct. 26 General Meeting. Guests will learn about both the popular public gardens and secret spots at Balboa Park enjoyed by those in the know. A brief history of Balboa Park will set the stage and carry one through to the latest developments in this local treasure.

Warren has been a UCCE certified Master Gardener since 1994. As a former editor of California Garden magazine, she wrote feature articles and a gardening column on edible plants for the San Diego Union Tribune, and many articles for other gardening publications. She collaborated on the University of California public information pamphlet on killer bees.

Warren was assistant coordinator for the flower and garden show at the San Diego County Fair for many years and still works with the Spring Home/Garden Show. She was a founding member of the California Garden and Landscape History Society and the San Diego Horticultural Society, serving on their boards and others.

She is also co-author of two books on California native plants with Greg Rubin: The California Native Landscape: The Homeowner's Guide to Restoring its Balance and Beauty and The California Drought-Defying Garden. As Horticulture Chair of Forever Balboa Park, her Adopt-A-Plot program has resulted in many upgrades in the gardens of Balboa Park. She will share some of the results of this program.

The meeting is held at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane; 12:30 p.m. is social time, 1 p.m. business meeting, with the program starting at 2 p.m. Masks are required for the non-vaccinated, recommended for vaccinated people.
