Fallbrook Vintage Car Club camps out for a car show

FALLBROOK – Members of the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club recently spent 10 days camping in Bishop and Lone Pine, California. The annual Bishop Fall Colors Car Show was held at the City Park on Saturday, Oct. 2. There were 125 cars from all over the West in attendance, including a Nash Metro that had been electrified; it stole the show.

That afternoon they drove up to Lake Sabrina for some "leaf-peeping" and fishing. Sunday, the group went to Convict Lake for more fishing and sightseeing on a pontoon boat and personal watercraft. Next up was a drive to see the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, up at 9,000 ft. in the White Mountains. The trees are up to 4,000 years old. Crowley Lake and Silver Lake were fished on Tuesday.

Wednesday, it was off to Lone Pine, about an hour south on 395. Friday was the start of the 31st Annual Lone Pine Film Festival featuring the history of the Alabama Hills and its use for scenes and locations for hundreds of Western movies starting in the 1930's. Members took guided tours of the set locations of many popular Westerns of that era. Beside the film tours, there was an Ansel Adams excursion that took them to the exact places where he took some of his finest photographs of the Sierra's and his career. His film developing process and use of filters was discussed.

The geology tour was a hiking trip that explained how the Owens Valley was formed and the jagged Sierra's of that area, with Mt. Whitney as the backdrop. The John Wayne tour covered his most popular movies made in Lone Pine. The afternoons included more fishing, at the Owens River and Diaz Lake.
