BONSALL (CNS) - A 58-year-old suspected drunken driver was killed today in a head-on collision on a rural road in the far northern reaches of San

Diego County.

The man was headed west on Old River Road in Bonsall when the Honda Civic he was driving veered into an eastbound lane in the path of an oncoming Ford F-350 pickup truck about 11:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The resulting crash near Camino Del Rey killed the car's driver, a Vista resident, at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the wreck was under investigation, though intoxication was believed to have played a role.

"Alcohol impairment was suspected (on the part of) the deceased," CHP public-affairs Officer Hunter Gerber said.

The collision forced closures of traffic lanes in the area until shortly after 2 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.

UPDATE - CHP report:

On Oct. 29, at approximately 11:45 a.m., a two-vehicle traffic collision occurred on Old River Road east of Camino Del Rey. A 58-year-old male from Vista was driving a Honda Civic in a westerly direction in the westbound lane of Old River Road. A 60-year-old male from Escondido was driving a Ford F-350 pick-up truck in an easterly direction in the eastbound lane of Old River Road.

For reasons that are still under investigation, the driver of the Honda Civic veered from the westbound lane of Old River Road into the eastbound lane of Old River Road, directly in front of the Ford F-350, causing a head-on collision.

The California Highway Patrol, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and the North County Fire/Paramedics responded to the scene. The 58-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Both the westbound and eastbound lanes of Old River Road were affected from the time of the collision, until approximately 2:10 p.m., as the scene was investigated.

Alcohol impairment was suspected for the deceased. This incident remains under investigation. Should a member of the public have witnessed this collision, they are encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol at 760-643-3400.

BONSALL (CNS) - One person was killed today in a collision on a rural road in the far northern reaches of San Diego County, authorities said.

The crash, involving a Honda Civic and a truck, occurred about 11:45 a.m. in the 31500 block of Old River Road in Bonsall, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At least one person had to be freed from the wreckage, North County Fire Protection District officials reported.

Traffic lanes in the area remained closed in the early afternoon due to the fatal accident.
