Re: 'Parents contend for high school board support against vaccine' [Village News, 10/28/21]

While I am not surprised, I continue to be disappointed in the reporting done by the Fallbrook Village News. Rick Monroe’s article on the Fallbrook High School Board of Trustees’ meeting of Oct. 25 was so blatantly one-sided that it isn’t reporting at all, but more like pandering.

He didn’t mention one word about the members of the public in attendance that commented on the board’s responsibility to follow the State mandate and help keep our residents safe and healthy. He didn’t say one word about the racist, hateful and demeaning remarks the “parents” he referred to spewed out at their fellow Fallbrookians when they took to the podium.

Some of those “parents” don’t even live in Fallbrook or have children at the high school. Good reporting would have ferreted that out. That kind of pandering needs to stop. It feeds the spreading of hate by those behaving in an uncivilized manner, yelling at their neighbors, disrespecting the democratic process in the public meeting setting. You need to stop being complicit in that hate.

The writer’s response:

I appreciate the feedback from Ms. Maldonado/Stamos. The story you wrote about was written the same evening as the meeting “ on deadline" and I didn’t have the opportunity to meet personally with all of the speakers to make sure I had names correct. I also had difficulty hearing the final couple speakers.

After the meetings, I met with a couple of the earlier individuals who spoke, to get name spelling, and tried to find a way to meet with the superintendent, but was unsuccessful. I believe the story is accurate, but could have shown “the other side.” As a matter of fairness, I will remember your comments.

It would be helpful if the board and/or superintendent at some point would take a position and respond to speakers, rather than leave issues simmering for meeting after meeting.

Rick Monroe
